About

Lielvarde Castle draws keen interest largely because, throughout its existence, it has been owned by archbishops, chapters, Russians, Lithuanians, and even Swedes. The castle was seen by many invaders as a prize of special value, constantly changing hands.

Rough stone masonry, green shrubbery, and vegetation, breaking its way through the centuries-old cement mortar - over the years, Lielvarde Castle has acquired the appearance of prehistoric ruins, while still retaining a tangible royal grandeur. The Livonian War, constant sieges, and the merciless passage of time did their work - the fortress was almost completely destroyed, and a garden was laid out in its place. A miniature tower on an elevation, where tea used to be drunk and where now heroic events are remembered, completes the picture.
