About

Once, where Koknese Castle now stands, there was an unsightly wooden fortress, rebuilt according to the decree of the local bishop, who at the time possessed almost royal authority. This reconstruction is associated with a legend, which, however, every guide narrates in their own way, adding and adding new details.

Soon the castle passed from the hands of the bishop to his devoted vassal, who in turn was forced to give this generous gift to the archbishop. The latter caused a wave of indignation among the Livonian Order, which saw in the archbishop's fascination with architecture a penchant for acquisitiveness and accumulation. The ruins of Koknese Castle, which became such after wars, restorations, and new destructions, attract quite a few tourists. The castle territory looks truly well-maintained and developed, despite its "age".
