My friend and I had lunch here yesterday. The food — especially the Polvo à Lagareiro — was very good, but the service was disappointing. There was basic staff interaction. We were served an incorrect Coke initially, and the orange juice only arrived after asking twice. The worst part was the payment. The waiter pointed out “service not included” and mentioned tipping. I clearly said “no,” as tipping in Portugal is optional and based on exceptional service. Yet he didn’t return my change. When I asked, he insisted I had said “ok” — which I absolutely hadn’t. Only after I pushed back twice did he return the change, adding a sarcastic remark about my country “not tipping.” When I explained that tipping isn’t part of Portuguese culture, he dismissed it, saying he’s lived here 17 years so “there is tipping.” That may be his view, but it doesn’t justify pressuring customers or misrepresenting them. Good food can’t make up for dishonest service. I won’t be returning.
