The National Art Museum of Ukraine is the most significant of all similar cultural institutions in the country. It was built by the architect V. Gorodetsky in 1899 based on a design by P. Boitsov in the Neoclassical style. Initially, it was named "City Museum of Antiquities and Art". The items from V. Khvoika's archaeological finds collection were placed on the 1st floor. The museum was officially opened in December 1904. From the very beginning, its collections were enriched through the contributions and funds of Kiev's main patrons, but the main works were acquired by the museum during the years of the revolution from private collections.

Уже само здание Национального Художественного Музея производит впечатление: огромные колонны, широкая лестница и два каменных льва, охраняющие вход. Насколько знаю, здесь насчитывается около 40 тыс. экспонатов живописи, графики и скульптуры Украины. А еще в музее можно увидеть чудесные образцы иконописи, начиная с XII столетия. Главная же гордость музейной коллекции – работы Малевича, Васильковского и Свитославского.
