The Imperial Crypt is located beneath the Capuchin Church and is intended for the burial of members of the former ruling dynasty of Austria, the Habsburgs. Here, 149 members of the Habsburg dynasty, including 12 emperors and 19 empresses and queens, have found their final resting place. Burials in the crypt continue to this day: the most recent one took place on July 16, 2011, when Otto von Habsburg, the last crown prince from the House of Habsburg, was laid to rest here. The Imperial Crypt is divided into 9 smaller crypts, as well as a chapel, where the wife of Emperor Karl I, Empress Zita of Bourbon-Parma, and one of their sons are interred. It was customary to place the hearts of the Habsburgs in silver urns in the Heart Crypt at the Augustinian Church, while other internal organs were buried in copper urns in the Ducal Crypt beneath St. Stephen's Cathedral.

A must visit for history buffs (or if you’re a fan of Empress Sisi) - aside from the themes of death and legacy, the interior architecture is also impressive 👍🏻 we booked the English tour online as well at an additional fee, but felt that this might not be necessary as there are ample signs around the crypt.

Die Gruft war super. Sehr beeindruckend. Leider wurde unser Besuch durch ein Kind, das durchgehend in der Gruft rumgebrüllt hat, gestört. Das Echo der Gruft hat dazu beigetragen, dass man das Geschrei wirklich überall gehört hat. Alle Besucher waren sichtlich genervt - vor allem weil es eine Grabstätte ist und dort Ruhe herrschen sollte. Es wäre schön gewesen, wenn einer der Angestellten nach einer gewissen Zeit eingeschritten wäre und die Eltern gebeten hätte, mit dem Kleinkind die Gruft kurzzeitig zu verlassen und zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt wieder zu komme, wenn es sich beruhigt hatte. Dadurch hat leider die Qualität des Besuchs enorm gelitten.
