Über

Hofburg is the imperial residence of the Habsburg dynasty. Originally, there was a fortress of the same name here. Today, only the castle chapel, executed in strict accordance with the canons of Gothic architecture, reminds us of this. Over time, the territory of the imperial possessions expanded, and the fortress was rebuilt into a luxurious residence.

Each representative of the dynasty expanded and rebuilt the residence: buildings were bought from neighbors, and new wings were built on the site of demolished ones. This explains the current layout with "courtyards". In total, the building houses about 2600 rooms and halls!

Today, Hofburg still serves as a residence, but to different owners - the President of Austria. On the palace grounds, performances of the Spanish Riding School are held, and several permanent exhibitions operate!

Nie polecam zwiedzać w weekend. Jest tak dużo turystów że sami sobą przesłaniają wystawy i wzajemnie sobie przeszkadzają. Uwielbiam takie miejsca , ale akurat tu nie mogłam się doczekać wyjścia. Wszystko takie mroczne i ten brak powietrza.

Absolutely magnificent place, absolutely not tourist friendly. We went with a Sisi fangirl to visit the Sisi museum on the morning only to hear that there are no tickets available for the day. You MUST buy a ticket the day before, for a precise timeslot. And even then, there are stories of tourists being refused entry for being a couple minutes late In any case, if your stay in Vienna is short, I strongly advise you get very well acquainted with the complex ticket system in place, some offering visits for multiple palaces and museums. Otherwise you will join the ranks of dejected tourists limited to the otherwise awesome outsides of these premises.
