The luxurious Fondaco dei Turchi Palace, located on the Grand Canal, is a magnificent example of Venetian-Byzantine style. The facade of the building more closely resembles the Middle Byzantine structures of Constantinople. It was this palace that later became a model for the construction of numerous churches in Venice. At one point, the building was considered a sort of ghetto where Turks lived. It later housed a market and a warehouse for merchants from the Ottoman Empire. Today, the palace is home to the Museum of Natural History, which includes zoological, ethnographic, entomological, and botanical collections. There are no fewer than 2 million exhibits, among which are the skeleton of a prehistoric crocodile and dinosaur remains. On the first floor of the palace, one can see a multitude of large aquariums, inhabited by residents of the underwater world.
