Museum of Cardiff mieści się w pięknym i zabytkowym budynku dawnej Głównej Biblioteki (Old Library) z 1882 roku, wzniesionej jako Cardiff Free Library, Museum and Schools for Science and Art. Początkowo pełniła podwójną funkcję edukacyjno–kulturalną – była nie tylko biblioteką, ale także siedzibą muzeum i szkół naukowych oraz artystycznych, które opuściły ją około 1890 roku. Instytucję otworzono w dawnym gmachu na The Hayes, ale formalne powstała znacznie później – w ostatnich latach XX wieku zaczęły się poważne prace nad przekształceniem tego miejsca w trwały ośrodek miejskiego dziedzictwa. W ramach jubileusu stulecia Cardiff jako miasta i stolicy (1905 i 1955) powstały wystawy-inicjatywy, takie jak „Moving Stories” i „Cardiff’s Century”, opierające się na historii miasta opowiadanej przez jego mieszkańców. Po szeregu konsultacji społecznych, zbierania lokalnych opowieści i zbiorów, wystaw oraz projektowania przestrzeni, w 2019 roku projekt zyskał nazwę Museum of Cardiff (wcześniej funkcjonowało jako Cardiff Story Museum).
