About

The vast Treptower Park covers an area of 90 hectares. In the second half of the 19th century, a sunflower garden was established on its grounds, and a bit later, several thousand rose bushes were planted. Germans and city guests enjoy leisurely walks among the roses and fountains of the park. There's also a pier, and visitors can take a small boat ride on the Spree River.

However, Treptower Park is known for the memorials to the soldiers who died in World War II. More than five thousand soldiers who laid down their lives during the liberation of Berlin are buried here. The symbol of the park is the statue of a Russian soldier holding a girl in his arms. The soldier's model was a real soldier, Nikolai Maslov, who saved a German girl from under fire. More than three hundred sculptors and stone-cutters worked on creating this memorial.
