El seu nom sembla derivar d'un pi existent en aquest indret des de fa molts anys. L'actual va ser plantat l'any 1985. La plaça, urbanitzada a principis del segle XIX, té planta rectangular i configura un espai harmònic i de gran interès arquitectònic, emfasitzat per la façana de l'església de Santa Maria del Pi i un conjunt molt notable d'edificis de diferents èpoques. Els dies festius ocupa la plaça un popular mercat de productes tradicionals.
