About

The Montjuïc Fortress vividly recalls numerous historical events and upheavals that have befallen Catalonia. Throughout its long history, the fortress walls served as an impregnable barrier against Habsburg invasions, steadfastly repelling any attempts to violate the city's sovereignty.

Long ago, many influential and prominent figures of the country were executed at Montjuïc Fortress, and they were buried right there on the local grounds. The fortress also housed a prison, whose cells were later converted into a Museum of Arms, which is still operational today. To reach the bustling city, many tourists use the cable car, which, incidentally, was renovated in 1920. Another noteworthy feature of the fortress is a huge cactus with long thorns, aptly named "mother-in-law's chair."
