About

The Ciutadella Park was built on the site of a military fortress, once conquered by the army of Philip, who had stripped Catalonia of its sovereignty. Time has returned everything to its rightful place, relieving the locals of the heavy burden of defeat and gifting them with blooming flowerbeds instead of a harsh and unfriendly outpost.

The park is centered around a large lake and a "trio" of alleys lined with elms, poplars, and lindens. Notable features include the Monumental Fountain, adorned with a quadriga of bronze Aurora and a series of impressive sculptures. On the opposite side of the lake from the fountain is the Armory Square, famous for its globally recognized weeping figure. As you stroll through the park, you can also see a monument to Walt Disney, the "Lady with an Umbrella," the Catalan Parliament, the Museum of Modern Art, and, of course, the Barcelona Zoo.
