About

The Begijnhof is a complex consisting of more than 50 houses that are used as residences, intended for single homeless women. You can only visit this place at certain times. This complex ranks among the top 10 places in Amsterdam that are a must-visit! The buildings of the complex were constructed in the 14th century, as reminded by the medieval wooden structures that can still be seen today. Interestingly, the complex, erected in the 1570s, underwent its first reconstruction only after 330 years! Many confuse it with a monastery, but this is not the case. Residents of the complex can get married and start a family at any time, although there were quite strict rules in place at one point.
