About

A key attraction of Amsterdam can be described as the Royal Palace, whose construction began in 1648 and was only completed 18 years later! Today, the palace houses a unique collection of items made in the style of various eras. The interior utilizes materials such as porcelain, marble, mahogany, crystal, while the massive walls are adorned with paintings by the best artists of the XVII - XVIII centuries. Visitors can enter the palace at any time, except perhaps on days when royal events are taking place.

Once called the eighth wonder of the world and the "Center of the Universe", this palace served as a city hall and tribunal before becoming the royal family's residence. It's well worth a visit and the local Amsterdammers are justly proud of it! The audio guide was informative, though a little long-winded at times (there's a way to turn it into text if you want to read through the information a little faster). Excellent sculptures, beautiful marble maps on the floor in the impressive main hall, and elegant bedrooms featuring period furniture that are still in use for state visits. Don't miss the elegantly carved marble Tribunal, where cases were heard and the death penalty was meted out. Less expensive than other museums in Amsterdam, this is a great idea for lovers of history, sculpture, and architecture!
