At the beginning of the 15th century, the tower was part of the city's defensive fortification - Regulirsport Gate. 130 years after their establishment, they were destroyed by fire. The tower was the only element to survive. After restoration and a minor reconstruction, it housed a Mint. That is also when it got its current name. The tower's main feature is a carillon of 38 bells. It chimes every quarter-hour, and its sound carries for many miles around. Today, tourists visit the Mint Tower wanting to buy a souvenir to take home.

der schönste Turm im Süden der Altstadt: Die Munttoren (Münzturm) ist ein Teil des ehemaligen Stadttores Regulierspoort, das zur ehemaligen Stadtmauer gehörte. Es gab ursprünglich zwei Türme und ein Wachhaus, die zwischen 1480 und 1487 gebaut worden waren. 1618 brannten beide Türme ab, danach baute man nur diesen westlichen Turm wieder auf. Der Name des Turms verweist darauf, dass hier im 17. Jahrhundert Münzen geschlagen wurden, als Amsterdam ein zeitliches Recht zum Münzschlagen bekam.
