About

Graben is the name of a Vienna street that holds tremendous historical significance for the city. The word "graben" translates as "ditch", and indeed: the street was established in the medieval period on the site of an ancient Roman defensive ditch. It has long been considered a street where the wealthy reside, and little has changed today, as it is still home to affluent individuals and, moreover, hosts luxurious stores with far from low prices. Graben is also famous for its historical sites, among which is the renowned Plague Column located in the center of the street, which was erected in 1679 to commemorate the cessation of a plague epidemic. Further along the pedestrian zone is another column adorned with nails, which in the past was used by merchants who, upon leaving the city, were required to drive a nail into the wood.
