About

Stretching for two kilometers along the Giudecca Canal is the "Zattere," once a dock for the transshipment of timber. Its current name, Zattere, came from the hospital located here, where the infected were brought during the plague. After the epidemic was over, the Santa Maria della Salute cathedral was constructed on the promenade, a project that took a whole 50 years to complete. Incidentally, this very promenade is the subject of an essay by the poet Joseph Brodsky. Walking along it, one can see a number of buildings of ancient architecture, including the Scuola dei Luganegheri. Then follows a series of magnificent mansions, among which Palazzo Molin stands out, built in the Gothic style.
