Zu Beginn sollte man die Geschichte des Sammlers und Autodidakten Mikkel kennen, um das Wunder der Sammlung besser zu schätzen. Mir hat es gefallen, wenn auch die Präsentation der Kunst auf äusserst engen Raum geschieht, was aber wohl nahe am Ursprung des Sammlers ist.

Johannes Mikkelillä oli neuvostomiehityksen aikana kaksi pientä kerrostaloasuntoa Mustamäessä, jonne hän keräsi huikean kokoelmansa. Hän tuskin mahtui liikkumaan asunnossa, jonne ei perhettä olisi mahtunutkaan. Nyt tilaa on runsaasti, mutta olisipa päässyt Mustamäkeen vierailemaan! Johannes Mikkelillä on ollut sosialistisen realismin aikaan oma pieni maailmansa. Varsinainen ihme on Mikkelin kokoelma ahtaana aikana, mikä kyllä menettää tehoaan nykyisessä avarassa museossa. Paikka on kyllä Mikkelin toivomusten mukainen.
