Powder Tower in Riga
About
The Powder Tower, over its existence since the distant 13th century up to the present day, has resiliently withstood numerous wars. Yet, passing through the centuries "unscathed" is challenging-the tower has changed its name from the Sand Tower to the Powder Tower and also lost its original "horseshoe" shape.
This unique architectural structure is located on Smilsu Street, surrounded by more modern buildings. Today, the tower houses a museum that boasts an impressive "assortment" of military artifacts, artistic paintings featuring battle scenes, various warriors' uniforms, and other essential elements of battles. The walls of the Powder Tower also preserve "fragments of history" in the form of twelve cannonballs embedded between the stone blocks. However, some naysayers claim that the cannonballs were "adorned" to the walls not during a war but much later.
