Porto

Begin your exploration of the largest city in Northern Portugal at the medieval Praça da Ribeira. Near the Luis I Bridge, a funicular line runs along the fortress wall. Close to the upper station, visit the Santa Clara Church; the interior walls, columns, and sculptures are adorned with gold leaf.

Nearby is the Cathedral Square. Surrounding the square are several museums and statues, the City Hall, Pillory, and the Bishop's Palace. Next to the São Lourenço Church, you'll find the famous viewpoint Rua das Aldas.

Stroll through the narrow streets of Porto's historic center: colorful medieval houses, art galleries, restaurants, and fado concerts. In the University area, you'll discover the famous Lello Bookstore and the Lion Fountain. The most beautiful azulejos (tile panels) can be found in the Cathedral's galleries, inside the São Bento Train Station, and on the facade of Santo Ildefonso Church.

Head to the left bank of the Douro River in the Vila Nova de Gaia district. Enjoy a ride on the cable car. Visit the tasting rooms of the best wineries. Learn about wine culture at the modern museum WOW Porto. Take in views of the river and city from the scenic viewpoints around the Serra do Pilar Monastery. If possible, go on a river cruise along the Douro River.
