About

The Odessa City Garden is not just a place where trees and flowers grow. It is a unique outdoor museum that any Odessite or city visitor can explore to admire interesting sculptures and works of contemporary artists. Yet, this place was not always as it is now. It all started at the end of the 18th century when Felix de Ribas, the brother of the founder of Odessa, decided to plant ten hectares of land granted to him with a variety of trees. To tell the truth, not all the exotic seedlings brought here from the Sofiyivka Park near Uman managed to adapt to the accommodating climate; however, some of them have survived here to this day.

In 1806, F. de Ribas decided to donate his garden to the city, and from that moment on, it was considered a city park.

Today, it is a place with interesting monuments, among which the sculptures dedicated to Leonid Utyosov, Sergey Utochkin, and the Twelve Chairs stand out. Also, at the entrance to the park from Deribasovskaya Street, one can notice two statues of a lion and a lioness, which are examples of French molding from the 19th century.
