House with a golden roof in Innsbruck
About
An attraction you virtually cannot miss in Innsbruck is the "Golden Roof" building. This intriguingly named structure features an arched system and small windows, situated on the central market square. A Gothic-style bay with a gilded roof and cozy balconies was added to the facade under Friedrich IV. This design was intended for the comfortable leisure of the imperial family and for observing city tournaments and parades. The bay itself is decorated with carved panels and reliefs, while frescoes depict the emperor with his subjects, exotic animals, proud standard-bearers, and coats of arms of ancient European states.
Today, the House's walls embrace the Museum of Habsburg History: valuable archives, collections of jewelry, and household items are the main exhibits.
