The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) is not only a vivid example of European Baroque but also a masterpiece of German church architecture. The construction of this Protestant cathedral began in the 1720s and lasted about 17 years. It was initiated by the residents, led by the city council, and the location was chosen for a reason - it succeeded a church that had been standing for over 700 years! A significant role in the city's appearance was played by the church's dome, made of sandstone.
For more than two centuries, the church was a central place of worship among German Protestants, capable of accommodating around 4,000 believers simultaneously. Another distinctive feature was the world's largest organ, where J.S. Bach himself gave concerts.
The modern, restored church was reopened in the early 2000s. After which, the nearby square and adjacent streets began to be developed.
