About

The first mention of the Holy Cross church dates back to the beginning of the 11th century; at that time, it was referred to as the Church of Saint Nicholas, the patron of merchants and sailors.

Originally, the architecture of the sanctuary adhered to the Romanesque style. Approximately 170 years later, in 1388, the church acquired one of the most precious Christian relics - the wooden part of Jesus's crucifixion. It was for this relic that a chapel was erected, and from then on the sanctuary was called the Church of the Holy Cross.

Throughout its existence, the fate of the church was quite troubled; it was repeatedly destroyed, first by fires, then by bombardment. Due to constant reconstruction, the interior style of the building changed as well. Initially, it was dominated by Gothic, followed by late Gothic, neoclassicism, and neo-Baroque. It was only in 2004 that the church's interior was fully restored to its original state.

Recordar, perdonar y construir.
