A key historical site to start exploring the landmarks of the Czech capital is the Old Town. It emerged in the 9th century, had about 13 gates, and was surrounded by a moat that served a defensive function. According to historical documents dated back to 1100, after the merchants of Prague became wealthy, King Wenceslas I granted them city privileges, and it was this moment that was key in the foundation of Prague. The Old Town is located in the present-day Prague 1 district, which in turn is situated on the right bank of the Vltava River. Today, where the moat used to be, lie Narodni and Revolucni streets. They are still considered the border of historic Prague. In connection with the expansion that took place in the 14th century, the wall and moat were dismantled, and under the order of Charles IV, the construction of the New Town began.
