About

The miniature, white-colored almshouses of Bruges were once built for the sick, elderly, and widows, who were numerous in the Middle Ages. In total, the city has 46 such comprehensive buildings, with 43 of them still continuing their noble cause to this day under the auspices of the Social Welfare Center.

In the former shoemakers' almshouse, there is now a museum of folk art. Two more architectural complexes with several dozen houses appeared in Bruges at the beginning of the twentieth century. One of them houses a small chapel that is frequently visited by locals and anyone under the care of social services by fate.
