I want to share my impressions of my trip to Berlin. I only had one free day to get acquainted with the city, but despite such a short "journey," I managed to walk through the city far and wide, seeing many interesting things.
After leaving the car in a free parking lot, in a residential area of eastern Berlin, we set off to explore the city. Since we started our tour from the eastern part (former GDR), I was initially a bit disappointed. Just your average post-Soviet city: wide avenues, typical architecture, panel buildings, etc. I think the only difference from any post-Soviet city is that everything is much better maintained - clean and tidy.
Then we headed to Alexanderplatz. There, we looked at: the TV tower, Saint Mary's Church, the majestic Berlin Cathedral, the Old National Gallery, and the historical museum.
We reached Unter den Linden and leisurely headed straight to the Brandenburg Gate. Unfortunately, we couldn't really enjoy the views while strolling through the city's main boulevard - practically the entire center of Berlin was dug up, with construction work everywhere. Making our way between scaffolding and barriers, we reached the famous gates. Selfie in front of the Brandenburg Gate done, we moved on. After walking just a few hundred meters, we approached the Reichstag building. Another selfie, and ahead of us was the Tiergarten Park.
The Tiergarten is not just a huge park, it is a forest around which the city began to grow at one time. It would take more than a whole day to walk around this park, and we didn't have much time. Quickly walking through half of the park, we reached the Victory Column.
Just 3 euros and about 285 steps up the staircase and you're on the viewing platform, atop the Victory Column. In any case, it's worth climbing - the views are beautiful.
After walking through the second half of the park, we reached the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Admiring one of the few churches that survived the war, we continued to walk through the streets of western Berlin (former FRG). It felt like a completely different city, with different architecture, cozy green streets...
The last goal was to see the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie. Not without difficulty, but we managed to find and see these two quite important and interesting attractions. By that time, we were quite tired, but we still had to cover about 5 km through the streets of Berlin to get back to our car and drive home. Despite the fatigue, it was nice to walk the last kilometers.
What's the outcome?
- 8 hours and 30 km of walks
- minimal money spent
- most of the attractions seen
- and most importantly - a multitude of positive emotions and impressions
The trip was unforgettable! I recommend everyone who hasn't been to visit the amazing and quite contrasting city of Berlin!
