About

The foundation of the German Opera dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. On its opening day, the stage featured a production of the famed opera "Fidelio," written by Beethoven.

Unfortunately, the opera building was destroyed during World War II as a result of bombing. A new building was erected only in the 1960s, in a more modern style. This time, the opening was marked by the opera "Don Giovanni," which Mozart worked on. The German Opera House is enormous, with a seating capacity of 1900 people. A huge display hanging above the stage shows subtitles in both German and English.

The opera is accessible only from the beginning of September to March. The most significant musical achievements since the war include the productions of "The Young Lord" by Henze and "Ulysses" by Henze.

We traveled from Hamburg to Berlin for the Kurt Weil production of Mahogany Aufstieg und Fall. This was a performance/ production of epic caliber. It was extremely experimental. The actors performed in the lobby, the bathroom, the subway entrance always being recorded with life cameras which was displayed inside the auditorium for the audience. Most of the seats were covered up with white fabric, and the audience was slow to remove it and sit down. The last part was happening on the enormous stage with the audience. Bing asked to come up and sit on matratazes. It was something I had never experienced before. The seats were comfortable, and the staff was very helpful and assisted us with our guest, who was older and with a visual handicap. It may have been my most favorite performance of all time.
