The MKT Restaurant & Bar at the Four Seasons is celebrated for its refined New American cuisine, sophisticated ambiance, and panoramic views—a dining experience synonymous with luxury in San Francisco. However, during a recent Saturday lunch, the gap between expectations and execution when it comes to vegan guests became starkly apparent. Despite indicating my dietary restrictions in advance through their table reservation system and requesting a callback to confirm a suitable menu, the restaurant failed to notify me that only their brunch menu is served on weekends—an omission mirrored on their own website. On arrival, staff scrambled to address my requirements, and multiple back-and-forths—including input from the chef and front of house—suggested an eager willingness to accommodate. Yet, this enthusiasm was undermined by confusion: my order for a vegan salad (which required removing cheese from an existing dish, an awkward workaround at a restaurant of this caliber) was mishandled, with miscommunication leading to dairy being served and ultimately a long wait for the corrected plate. I should perhaps have known to be more vigilant given that our server asked me if I wanted a side of chicken or fish with my salad (yes, this was after all the back and forth about me being vegan!) Given the dairy that was sprinkled on my salad, my son was nearly finished before my own meal arrived. For a restaurant where entrées frequently exceed $30 or $40, such gaps in communication and vegan options are surprising in a progressive city like San Francisco. While the staff was courteous and eventually resolved the issues—and the views and ambiance were great—the experience highlights a need for greater awareness among staff about what it means for a dish to be vegan and more robust vegan offerings to truly match the standard Four Seasons sets for itself.

It was with some trepidation that I decided to eat here with colleagues after a conference. An Italian restaurant in a hotel chain. Then the lamb ragu was brought to the table. Oh my lordy. Its clear that the chef is very talented and cooks with pride and professionalism. I've been in the States for a year - this is the best food experience so far.
