Il s'agit d'une des principales portes monumentales de Rome insérée dans l'antique muraille aurélienne, célèbre à deux titres. D'abord son plan à l'origine a été dessiné par Michel Ange alors âgé de plus de 80 ans. Il s'agit donc d'une de ses dernières oeuvres, assez théâtrale. Toutes, la porte fut plusieurs fois restaurée, donc la part de Michel Ange reste limitée. En revanche, c'est juste à côté de la Porta Pia que fut ouverte la brèche qui permit aux troupes du roi Victor Emmanuel d'entrer dans Rome et de vaincre les troupes papales en 1870. Grâce à cette victoire, Rome et les états pontificaux entrèrent dans le nouvel état italien unifié. Un musée installé à l'intérieur de la porte rappelle cette victoire, en plus il est gratuit.
