La statua "L' UOMO AL TIMONE" , esempio di scultura monumentale nazionalista portoghese che rende omaggio ai pescatori, rappresentati dall'uomo che stringe vigorosamente il timone, fu commissionata da Henrique Galvão ad Américo Gomes per l'Esposizione Coloniale Portoghese (16 giugno - 30 settembre 1934) tenutasi al Palácio de Cristal. Tuttavia, dopo la conclusione dell'Esposizione, a causa del grande successo dell'opera, fu istituito un comitato per fonderla in bronzo e collocarla sul lungomare. La statua fu inaugurata il 27 gennaio 1938.
