About

The construction of the three-altar Holy Dormition Cathedral, designed by the architect L. Otton, began in 1855, and the solemn consecration ceremony by Archbishop Dimitry of Kherson and Odessa (Muretov) took place in April 1869. The church building was destined to endure not just one war and revolution. It was almost completely destroyed during the Soviet era and partially in the period of the Second World War.

Today, one of the most significant sanctuaries in the southern part of Ukraine consists of the Upper and Lower Churches, as well as a bell tower that rises to 56 meters. The interior of the Holy Dormition Cathedral can accommodate up to 5000 parishioners, clearly confirming its rather impressive dimensions.

The church's most valuable sacred relics are considered to be the relics of the Orthodox Jonah of Odessa and the Kaspirovskaya miraculous icon of the Mother of God.
