Munich

The heart of Bavaria's capital is Marienplatz, the square of carnivals and fairs. Admire the New Town Hall and Glockenspiel and find the sculpture of a dragon. The Old Town Hall houses the toy museum. Just a block from the main square is Frauenkirche – a 15th-century Gothic cathedral with tall twin towers. Nearby is the city's oldest cathedral, Alter Peter. Panoramic views of the city can be enjoyed from the towers of the cathedrals and the New Town Hall.

The most famous pedestrian zone in the Old Town starts at Karlsplatz (locally known as Stachus). Try beer at Platzl square, which has retained the 17th-century atmosphere. Many festivals take place at Odeonsplatz, surrounded by Italian Renaissance-style buildings. The architectural ensemble of Königsplatz is in the classical style. Appreciate the grandeur of the Residence, the Wittelsbacher fountain, and the market space of Viktualienmarkt.

The main venues of the famous beer festival are located at Theresienwiese, near the Bavaria statue. Visit the world's largest technology museum with multimedia exhibitions and science shows. The WOW Museum of Illusions offers fascinating exhibits. The collections of Munich's four Pinakothek museums are worth attention. In the Olympic Park, be sure to ascend the Olympic Tower's observation deck, which stands at a height of 290 meters.
