Schwerin

The charming city in northern Germany possesses a unique romantic aura. The gracefulness of Schwerin Castle, surrounded by a lake, with its 365 turrets and the luxurious chambers of the Duke of Mecklenburg, is astounding. Be sure to admire the gardens, grottos, greenhouses, and courtyards of the castle – entrance is free for everyone.

You could endlessly wander the medieval streets of Schelfstadt, the city's central district. Marvel at the mix of Gothic and half-timbered houses, explore the shop windows on the Market Square, and relax at tiny café tables. In the mirrored surface of Pfaffenteich Pond, the pearl of the Old City – the majestic brick Gothic Schwerin Cathedral – is reflected. Inside the cathedral, behind the white columns, the ducal tombs are hidden.

Schwerin is a city of craftsmen and artists. It still has a 17th-century mill that crushed stone instead of grain. Fans of Flemish painting and contemporary art should visit the State Museum. Schwerin is a city with a rich calendar of events. It's worth visiting during the opera festival, annual dragon boat races, Christmas markets, or the Schlossfestspiele theater festival.
