2025 Churches, Cathedrals

The Almudena Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whose statue is linked to a popular city legend, is officially known as the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena. This Catholic sanctuary, built in a Neo-Gothic style, houses a statue of the Virgin Mary that dates back to the sixteenth century.

The Almudena Cathedral regularly holds Sunday and festive masses, with a statue of Pope John Paul II, who consecrated the site during his papacy, standing at the entrance to the majestic building. It is an intriguing fact that if you look at the cathedral from the side of the Pío hill, both the cathedral and the Royal Palace (the residence of the monarchs) may appear as one single entity. This resemblance is striking but deceptive, as the stone sanctuary was constructed only at the beginning of the 1990s.
