🚇 Kennington 🍺 £3.90 Fosters ❤️ An inner city precinct pub and a social hub to the local community. . I visited this pub by chance as I wasn’t aware of its existence. I was chatting to Jackie who worked behind the bar at my previous pub, I told her I was on a crawl of the area and she asked “did I know The Canterbury “ which I didn’t. After finishing my pint at The Queen Elizabeth I headed off to find The Canterbury Arms which ended up being a ten minute walk. . This pub is situated on a precinct and set amongst some local shops and high rises. The pub was built in the late 50’s and is situated in the middle of the Brandon Estate. I visited around 5pm on a Saturday afternoon and it was eerily quiet considering how built up the area was. . On entering I headed towards the back bar and ordered a pint of Fosters, not my favourite pint but the beer choice was limited. I moved from the back bar to the front and pulled up a stool around the bar where most punters were based. Someone muttered “Gavvers are in” to which I thought, oh no he thinks I’m old bill. I was told at the previous pub that Chenille should be working here, so I said to the girl behind the bar “are you Chenille, I’m on a pub crawl of Walworth and Jackie sent me from The Queen Elizabeth “. We had a little chat at the bar which seemed to calm down the anxiety over my job title, Chenille was great by the way. . This is obviously a locals pub, when a complete stranger walks in to an estate pub this can beg the question “why is he here?” I spent alot of my youth being brought up in an estate pub so I fully understand. The atmosphere was calm with two main groups in the pub, the staunch locals were sat around the bar and there was a group of Eastern Europe lads sat around one of the tables. The decor here is simple with a proper pub carpet, there were a couple of Tv’s showing the snooker and the darts, there’s also a fruity if you fancy your chances. . The Canterbury Arms is dying breed of pub in London. Hundreds of estate pubs have closed with either trade tailing off or licensing problems due to crime being committed and not controlled. I hope this pub survives, endures and remains a community hub. If you lived here and this was your place of social interaction, meeting friends or just popping out for a pint what do you do if it longer exists? . 📊 Information correct on visiting 05/03/22 If you want to see all my pub reviews in one place, head to @londonpubmap on Instagram. 🍻
