Foi o local onde D. Catarina de Bragança, viúva do rei de Inglaterra Carlos II, quando regressou a Portugal em 1693, escolheu para morar. Adquiriu a D. Francisca Pereira Teles as casas nobres e a quinta agregada, e aqui construiu o Paço da Rainha. Arquitectura residencial, setecentista. Esta residência régia foi palco de vários acontecimentos históricos relacionados com o período da Revolução Liberal, tendo nele falecido o rei D. João VI. É neste palácio que está instalada a Academia Militar.
