Yüzü denize dönük, sırtı tarihe yaslı, Rüzgârla konuşur, martılarla dertleşir, Roma’nın kalbinden kopup İstanbul’a düşmüş bir hatıradır. Zaferin suskun dik duruşudur, Ne bir tahtı var, ne bir tacı… Ama gökyüzüne uzanan her çizgisi, Bir imparatorun rüyasından kalan izdir bu taşta. Savaşlar unutur kendini, Ama taş hatırlar… Gotlar Sütunu anlatmaz, Sadece durur; Ve sadece anlayana fısıldar: “Ben buradaydım, onlar geçip gitti…” İstanbul’un en eski anıtlarından biridir ve Sarayburnu Parkı’nda, denize bakan bir yamaçta yer alır. Mermerden yapılmış bu sade ama etkileyici sütun, İmparator Claudius II Gotikus ya da Constantinus I onuruna MS 3. veya 4. yüzyılda dikildiği düşünülür. Adını, Roma’nın kuzey sınırlarına saldıran barbar kavimlerden olan Gotlara karşı kazanılan zaferden alır. Antik çağlardan bugüne ulaşan bu anıt, İstanbul’un Roma dönemine ait ayakta kalan en eski dikilitaşıdır. Üzerindeki Latince yazıt zamanla silinmişse de, geçmişin ihtişamı hâlâ sütunun gövdesinde hissedilir. Yaklaşık 18.5 metre yüksekliğindedir ve başlık kısmı Korint üslubundadır. Her ne kadar günümüzde etrafı biraz sessiz ve geri planda kalmış olsa da, tarih boyunca denizden gelenleri İstanbul’a “Roma’nın şehri”ne hoş geldin der gibi karşılamıştır.
