The cable-stayed bridge, like the mighty hand of an ancient god, connects the Old Town with the relatively "younger" new Riga. Until recently, this structure was considered the longest in Europe - naturally, within its "cable-stayed class".

The first thing that catches the eye when looking at the Cable-Stayed Bridge is its asymmetry. This is not a mishap by the builders nor a mistake in the plans, but rather a necessity. This is due to the capricious nature of the Daugava River and the desire of Soviet designers to create something truly magnificent, but with a "twist". The bridge spans thirty meters in length, has four lanes for traffic, and separate pedestrian sidewalks. Interestingly, the structure has never acquired its own unique name, and so it has remained simply the Cable-Stayed Bridge.
