The Sewer Museum is one of the most original museums in the world. It represents a segment of an actual functioning sewer system. Sewers, as we know them today in Paris, only came into being towards the end of the 19th century. It was then that Baron Haussmann and the engineer he employed, Belgrand, designed the city's water supply system. After inspecting the existing tunnels and discovering several forgotten ones, the city authorities ordered them to be cleaned out and put back into operation. To create the museum, a decision was made to completely clean out several minor tunnels and equip them with everything necessary (ramps, lighting, ventilation, etc.).
