The building dedicated to the Jacquemart-André Museum is a lavishly decorated 19th-century palace that once belonged to the successful banker and ardent art enthusiast, Edouard André, and his wife, Nélie Jacquemart, a former artist known for her salon portraits. Today, the location serves as a museum as well as a tea room renowned throughout France. It was the former owner's will to use the mansion to display a collection of paintings. Among the collection, one can also find her own works, including a portrait of her husband, which is hung in the main hall on the ground floor.

I discovered this museum completely by chance and hadn’t checked what collections were on display. I was very pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the temporary exhibition on Artemisia Gentileschi. There’s no AC, but there is a beautiful courtyard, a café, and a lovely little shop. A wonderful and atmospheric place to return to!

This could have been a great experience but unfortunately, it wasn’t. The building itself is stunning, and we really enjoyed the permanent exhibition. However, things took a turn for the worse at the Artemisia Gentileschi exhibit. The artworks were displayed in rooms barely the size of a shoebox, making it impossible to view the (often large) paintings from any real perspective. Visitors were practically fighting to get a glimpse. I don’t know if the organizers simply didn’t expect interest in the exhibit, or if they just didn’t care enough to properly honor Artemisia Gentileschi and treat her with the same respect afforded to her male counterparts - either way, it’s sadly ironic that, 372 years after her death, her art is still being diminished. It’s also worth noting that there were no didactic panels in English at the exhibit. Overall, the experience left a bad taste in my mouth and left me feeling frustrated. That said, I would still recommend visiting, the paintings themselves are incredibly beautiful and worth seeing despite the poor curation.
