Monument to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in Brüssel

This statue of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza from the Cervantes novel is situated in a square right across from a statue of the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. The square is a place to commemorate artists. The statue is a replica of one in Madrid and may have been a gift from Spain to Brussels. The Bartok statue was given by Budapest to Brussels in the 90s. The statues make a nice pair, the one dynamic and adventurous, the other internal, sensitive, and brooding. Notice how Don Quixote and his sidekick are facing the spire of the town hall building and the Grand Plaza as if yearning to get to the center of this great city.

During a stroll through Brussels, I stumbled upon a charming little square featuring the statue of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, two iconic characters from Cervantes' masterpiece. For me, the encounter with the statue was especially meaningful because of my fond memories of my Literature teacher, Galina Nikolaevna Belyaeva. Her passion for Cervantes' work brought these two characters to life for me many years ago. I vividly remember how she would discuss their adventures and teach us about their philosophical depth, which made Don Quixote and Sancho Panza unforgettable figures in my literary education. Located in a peaceful corner of the city, the statue is an unexpected yet delightful discovery for anyone who appreciates classic literature. It stands as a reminder not only of Cervantes' genius but also of the way literature can leave a lasting impact on our lives.
