The monument to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza can be seen not only in Brussels but also in many capital cities around the world. However, each sculpture conveys the meaning and beauty of Cervantes' novel in its own unique way, as if trying to tell something new to everyone who passes by.

The monument is installed on a high round base, and under the hooves of Rocinante and the donkey called Grey, there is a massive stone slab. This architectural choice is intentional - it simply protects Don Quixote and Sancho Panza from vandals. If you look at the "pointing finger" of the knight from La Mancha, it might seem that both riders are heading towards the town hall, obviously having spotted the ill-fated windmills somewhere in the distance.

This statue of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza from the Cervantes novel is situated in a square right across from a statue of the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. The square is a place to commemorate artists. The statue is a replica of one in Madrid and may have been a gift from Spain to Brussels. The Bartok statue was given by Budapest to Brussels in the 90s. The statues make a nice pair, the one dynamic and adventurous, the other internal, sensitive, and brooding. Notice how Don Quixote and his sidekick are facing the spire of the town hall building and the Grand Plaza as if yearning to get to the center of this great city.

During a stroll through Brussels, I stumbled upon a charming little square featuring the statue of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, two iconic characters from Cervantes' masterpiece. The statue is an incredible tribute to the enduring legacy of these characters, and it made me reflect on their significance in literature and life. I was immediately struck by the vivid portrayal of Don Quixote, with his idealistic expression, and Sancho Panza, his loyal and more grounded companion. The sculptor beautifully captured the contrast between their personalities, making the figures not just a physical representation but a symbol of their deep, inseparable bond. The details in the statue, from the flowing mane of Don Quixote's horse to the curious and humorous stance of Sancho, evoke a sense of timelessness. For me, the encounter with the statue was especially meaningful because of my fond memories of my Literature teacher, Galina Nikolaevna Belyaeva. Her passion for Cervantes' work brought these two characters to life for me many years ago. I vividly remember how she would discuss their adventures and teach us about their philosophical depth, which made Don Quixote and Sancho Panza unforgettable figures in my literary education. Located in a peaceful corner of the city, the statue is an unexpected yet delightful discovery for anyone who appreciates classic literature. It stands as a reminder not only of Cervantes' genius but also of the way literature can leave a lasting impact on our lives. If you're ever in Brussels, this little statue is well worth a visit, offering both a moment of reflection and a beautiful connection to one of the most influential works of world literature.
