Rappresenta il primo edificio del progetto del Forum Fridericianum, ideata dallo stesso Federico il Grande e venne costruita come Opera reale tra il 1741 e il 1743. E' stato il primo teatro dell'opera all'aperto della Germania e il più grande d'Europa. L'edificio, realizzato nello stile del Neoclassicismo prussiano sotto l'influsso della classica architettura inglese, sulle scie di Palladio, si ispira alla forma di un tempio corinzio.
