Ah, keizerin Kunigunde – daar staat ze dan, in vol ornaat, alsof ze net even pauze heeft genomen van het regeren over het Heilige Roomse Rijk om ons met een koele blik te beoordelen: "Jij daar, met die döner in je hand... heb je wel respect voor het keizerlijk erfgoed?" Deze dame is niet zomaar een beeld – ze was heilig én keizerin, een soort middeleeuwse multitasker avant la lettre. Getrouwd met Heinrich II (ja, die van de dom), stichtte ze kerken, steunde kunst en cultuur én werd later heilig verklaard. Dat is meer dan jij en ik op ons cv hebben staan. Het beeld zelf is prachtig gedetailleerd en staat fier op haar sokkel, alsof ze elk moment een diplomatieke missie in de Altstadt kan beginnen. En geloof me, kinderen kijken haar aan alsof ze net uit een fantasyfilm is gestapt. “Mama, is dat een tovenares?” – “Nee lieverd, dat is een keizerin met karakter.” Aanrader: even stoppen, een selfie met Kunigunde, buiging maken (optioneel) en dan door naar de Dom – waar ze nog steeds over ons waakt. En zeg eerlijk: zo’n beeld zie je niet elke dag. Statig, sterk, een tikkeltje streng... net als je schoonmoeder, maar dan in brons.
