We came to Tonari for dinner for 2 and had a good experience. Overall, everything was tasty but the only dish that we found incredible and would come back for was the corn pizza. And we definitely will come back for the pizza! Other than that, we got the burrata (it was ok- not enough chili), garlic bread (yummy!), and two pastas (good but not excellent).

I really want to come back to this place and try their normal menu, that being said, the Japanese cheesesteak popup was lackluster. I grew up around Philly so I've eaten a few cheesesteaks here and there. The idea of "Japanese cheesesteak" sounds like an odd blend of cuisine, likely coming from a Japanese couple called the Chujos who have grown to love the regional dish. History lesson over, TLDR: the steak was slightly cold, and dripping from juice. Made the bread soggy mid way through. Kind of was expecting a full 12 incher (insert innuendo). I hope to come back and be able to edit my review since the food here and ambiance looks really good!! However, I cannot endorse the Philly cheesesteak at present.

This isn't just a meal; it's an experience! Tonari is an absolute gem in DC, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It deserves every one of those five stars! A Culinary Masterpiece From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was perfect—chic, buzzing, and inviting. But the real star is the food. The concept, blending Roman-style pasta and Japanese techniques and flavors, is brilliant and executed flawlessly. Every dish we tried was a revelation. The pizza dough is somehow perfectly chewy and crisp, and the pasta dishes are otherworldly. Seriously, I'm still dreaming about the cacio e pepe, which had an unexpected, yet completely harmonious, Japanese twist. Chef Katsuya Fukushima's Genius The genius behind it all is, of course, Chef Katsuya Fukushima. His vision for Tonari is palpable in every bite. He's taken two seemingly disparate cuisines and woven them together into something completely unique and utterly delicious. It's clear that this is food made with immense skill, passion, and respect for ingredients. This is a chef at the top of his game, and Tonari is a testament to his creativity. Impeccable Service The service was also impeccable. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, and clearly passionate about the menu, guiding us through the different offerings with excellent recommendations. If you're looking for one of the most exciting and delicious dining experiences in Washington, DC, look no further than Tonari. Go. Now. You won't regret it. Five stars all around!
