About

Thanks to meticulous restoration or special circumstances, some ancient landmarks today appear untouched by time - the Biržai Castle-Palace can be counted among such structures.

Back in the 16th century, a manor was built in the town of Biržai, which over the next few centuries changed owners and underwent numerous transformations in its appearance. The complex consists of about two dozen different buildings and extensions, with the main structures built in the style of Dutch fortresses, featuring fortified bastions and arch systems. The castle was surrounded by a deep moat and embankments, but after the Northern War, only ruins remained in its place.

At the end of the 19th century, authorities fully restored the palace, executing the facades in the Renaissance style: today, the Biržai Castle-Palace stands as the "jewel" of the city with a library and museum.
