The restaurant Mallard was a totally unexpected discovery. It is Located on the Wrong side of the tracks. So the food had to be good for it to survive. Indeed the food was very good-it delivered beyond our expectations . Reading up later on google I found out that it is run by a Vietnamese sounding chef owner who worked years at Alain duasse restaurants before starting the Mallard. His flawless executions of classic French dishes- steak au poivre and vol au vent with sweet breads for example show off his training and finesse. There is no faffing around with gimmicky, unnecessarily decorative presentation. Just honest delicious food made with really good ingredients . The flan with perfectly set custard was generously laced with high quality vanilla—you could see ( and taste ) the flecks of vanilla that come out of a vanilla pod as opposed to the cheaper vanilla essence used more frequently in restaurants of this price range. His foie gras starter was beautifully matched with stoned cherries cooked so that the flesh yielded to the right point of softness and tartness. I gave 5 stars for the atmosphere even if the decor was basic. It was unpretentious, simple with an attractive 60-70’s vibe. Service was efficient, without being too impersonal. I saw drop in guests being turned away at 13.40 on Saturday which suggested to me that the management was not trying to squeeze out every penny from the business. A gem amidst many restaurants on the Côte d’Azur which serve mediocre to low quality food because their location and captive tourist clientele allow them to get away with it.
