About

In the vibrant city of Naples, the Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore stands as a testament to the grandeur of Baroque architecture. Opened in 1538, this minor basilica, elevated by Pope Pius XII in 1951, offers visitors an extraordinary experience with its lavish interior decorations and stunning facade. Built atop the ruins of a 1st-century temple dedicated to the Dioscuri, its unique history is woven into every detail, including the impressive Corinthian columns from the ancient temple that are incorporated into its current structure.

The influence of architects Francesco Grimaldi, Giovanni Giacomo Di Conforto, and Giovan Battista Cavagna can be seen in the basilica's eclectic design, enhanced by the statues created by Ferdinando Fuga and the vibrant paintings of Francesco Solimena. Inside, the lavish golden ceiling and intricate decorations provide a magnificent spectacle, making it a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Naples.

Easily accessible in the bustling town, the basilica is just 20-30 steps that offer sweeping views of the surrounding area. Entry is free, with donations encouraged, allowing visitors to admire the relics of Saints Avellino and Gaetano. The Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore is not only an architectural wonder but also a serene retreat amidst the lively pace of the city.
