San Esteban Archaeological Site in Murcia invites visitors to explore a well-preserved medieval neighborhood, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry from the 11th century to the Late Middle Ages. This site is recognized as the most thoroughly documented archaeological area of Arrixaca's medieval quarter. Detailed archaeological interventions and historical texts in both Arabic and Spanish provide a vivid glimpse into the past. The site features residential complexes, religious areas, a necropolis, prayer spaces, and an Islamic burial ground, all spread over 3,000 to 4,000 square meters, carefully conserved by the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage. Its family-friendly grounds make it an educational and intriguing destination for visitors of all ages.

El yacimiento de San Esteban constituye el mejor conjunto arqueológico documentado hasta la fecha del arrabal medieval de la Arrixaca, barrio extramuros surgido posiblemente en el siglo XI y en uso hasta el final de la Edad Media. Este arrabal era una parte muy importante de la ciudad andalusí de Mursiya y su evolución es bien conocida gracias a distintas intervenciones arqueológicas desarrolladas en las décadas finales del siglo XX y a partir de la documentación escrita, tanto árabe como bajomedieval castellana. A mediados del siglo XII, Abū ‘Abd Allāh al-Idrīsī confirma la existencia del arrabal, amurallado y recorrido por la acequia Aljufía. Este arrabal que se extendería por los frentes norte y oeste de la ciudad es un espacio urbano que ocupa un lugar central desde una perspectiva económica, especialmente comercial. La intervención desarrollada permitió comenzar una investigación integral en cuatro espacios especialmente relevantes del yacimiento: el Recinto I, el Recinto II, el edificio denominado “oratorio” y la maqbara o cementerio islámico. La investigación se desarrolla desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar, combinando distintos estudios de materiales, entre los que destacan los análisis bioarqueológicos.

Es una lastima que los restos los mantengan en estas condiciones. Deberían de darle una solución para que tanto los murcianos como los turistas puedan ver y disfrutar de una parte de nuestra historia. Le doy 5 estrellas por la importancia del lugar. Pero cero en cuanto a la gestión que se está llevando.

Initial stage of an archeological excavation. Great that it has been protected when discovered, as this is patrimony of the humanity. I can see it will take time to complete. But this type of work requires time and investment, and once it is completed, it would be an excellent place to visit and understand the historical background of Murcia
