Haarlem

Wide sandy beaches, the nature reserves of Zuid-Kennemerland and Koningshof, golf courses, and cycling tracks make this seaside town in the west of the Netherlands an excellent vacation spot.

Start your exploration of Haarlem at the massive Amsterdam Gate; visit the round building of the former prison Koepelgevangenis and have a photo session in front of the 18th-century windmill (which houses a museum inside). Set off on an open boat cruise along the canals surrounding the historical city center to see the charming old buildings, waterfronts, and bridges.

Stroll through the narrow medieval streets; explore the famous hofjes of Haarlem (21 enclosed garden courtyards; the oldest dates back to the 14th century). Relax at one of the cafes on the Grote Markt, and appreciate the art galleries located on the square. Book tickets in advance for an organ music concert at the Gothic church of St. Bavokerk - young Mozart once played on this organ.

In the most beautiful part of the city, there are two museums with collections of paintings by the well-known portrait artist Frans Hals. Go shopping in the de Gouden Straatjes shopping district. Visit the brewery De Jopenkerk: the brewery is located in a former church building. The park around the government residence Paviljoen Welgelegen is open to tourists. On Fridays, the science museum Volkssterrenwacht Copernicus hosts lectures about the stars.
